Teens Can Write Too ~ Why I Write

May 7, 2012 § 13 Comments

**So Sorry I missed yesterday. You can throw rocks at me. And sticks. Maybe a watermelon. I hear those hurt. I would like to say I have an excuse but considering the amount of tv I watched yesterday, I don’t, for which I apologize again for tremendously.**

*intro Music*

But alas, today is the day of my post on the great Teens Can Write Too Blog Chain, an affair I always enjoy participating in. Teen writers are given a prompt and set out to build a stronger community throughout the teen writers blogging world.

This Months Prompt: Why do you write?

Sarah stares at the computer screen.

She bites her lip.

She starts a sentence, then earases it.

She has freaking no idea why she writes.

There are the obvious reasons, I appear to be good at it, it’s fun, words are my friends.

There are the less obvious reasons, it’s what makes me different from everyone else, it’s an escape, it’s an evacuation route.

It is possible, dear reader, that there are far too many reasons.

I write because when I read I am so carried away I believe in love. I write because I want to carry someone else away like that, on hands that are made of sentences, in arms that rhyme. I write because I want to have someone falling asleep with my book covering their nose the way I have so many times with John Green, and Jaclyn Moriarty, and Steinbeck, and Fitzgerald.

I like it when people call me funny. This year, there was this guy and he looks at me one day after I made some sarcastic crack to my friend in Health and he goes, “Sarah, you’re really funny.”

I write because I wish that happened more.

I write because I’ve always written, my first novel in 1st grade, my first partnered novel in 3rd (with the inconceivable beauty called Coffee of Man Eating Pixies.), won my first NaNoWriMo in seventh.

I wrote when I was a terrible speller, when my vocabulary was nothing but words I learned for eavesdropping on conversations adults had. I wrote when i was sad, when I was angry, when I felt better.

And true, I’m not only a writer. I like to take pictures and write songs, and go shopping. (Yeah, I said it. I’m a teenage girl, I go shopping. Although, to be fair, most teenage girls do not come home from shopping with zombie t-shirts, Dr. Who t-shirts, and Psych t-shirts. So I think I’m still winning on this front.) In fact this year alone, I think I’ve grown not only as a writer but someone who’s much more open to learning, even things I had never thought I would like to learn before. I just read the newspaper. I hang out in the Non-fiction aisles at the library (somewhere I never though I’d be).

I am, pretty much, an original gangster.

But without reading? Without writing and growing up on words? I have no idea who I would be.

Writing is what has formed me. What has made me the person I am today. It’s made me want to go to Australia, made me want to create, made me want to share these things with you guys.

So In the end, I write because without writing I could be anybody.

Only, I’m not anybody. I’m me, and I’m rather happy with that for now.
