When Angels Fall

When Angels Fall

When angels fall we find them

in yard sales—

church rummage sales—

behind an ugly old vase

they only hung on to for this long

because it was a dead

grandmother’s favorite.

The fallen angels

like to hide underneath

antique tables with an etched design

of fairy tale creatures

that seem haunting and beautiful

until you notice the wolf eating the hooded

girl and the dwarf killing the boy

dressed as a bear to get his Rose

and you know it’s haunted alone.

When the angels fall we can hear

their wings beat

just like heart beats, and for a minute

the fool us into thinking their alive.

They are excellent liars.
